Cleaning the upper and lower stainless steel chambers
For best results, use warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent when cleaning the upper and lower chamber. Do not soak the chambers for prolonged periods of time or use abrasive cleaners. This may cause corrosion or permanent discoloration of both chambers over time and will void the warranty of your system. Dry both chambers completely with a kitchen towel before reassembling and reinstalling your system. The Black Berkey purification elements in your stainless steel Big Berkey system are highly durable and will last up to 6,000 gallons. To protect them, it is important to clean the system regularly.
The most common cause for clogging of the Black Berkey elements is sediment build up in the lower chamber of the system. This sediment can come from a variety of sources such as; lead, chlorine, sulfates and minerals from your water supply.
